Advanced knee & hip replacement surgery with specialized training from Singapore General Hospital and MIOT Chennai.

Joint Replacement Excellence

Specialized Joint Replacement Expertise

Dr. Jigar D. Shah brings world-class expertise in both knee and hip replacement surgery. His CLS Technique for knee replacement, developed after advanced training at Singapore General Hospital (SGH), allows patients to sit cross-legged after surgery.

For hip replacement, Dr. Shah received specialized training from the renowned MIOT Institute, Chennai — one of Asia's largest Hip Replacement Centers — under the legendary mentor Dr. Prithvi Mohandas. This dual specialization, combined with over two decades of surgical experience, makes Shaurya Hospital a trusted destination for joint replacement surgery.

Hip replacement surgery - before and after recovery with X-ray

Understanding Your Knee

Stages of Knee Arthritis

The knee joint cushion (meniscus) wears down over time, progressing through four stages. Understanding your stage helps determine the right treatment.

1

Stage 1

Mild

Pain just started. X-ray almost normal.

Lifestyle changes, exercise

2

Stage 2

Moderate

Pain on getting up, difficulty in long walks. Decreased joint space on X-ray.

SFRT injection, braces

3

Stage 3

Severe

Difficulty on stairs, limp. Bone spurs visible on X-ray.

SFRT (early), evaluation

4

Stage 4

Advanced

Can't sit cross-legged, bent legs, avoids socializing due to pain. Bone-on-bone on X-ray.

Joint Replacement (CLS)

Knee Replacement

Knee Joint Replacement by CLS Technique

Full Movement with Cross Leg Sitting — Developed after advanced training at Singapore General Hospital

What is CLS Technique?

CLS stands for Comfortable Low Sitting / Crossed Leg Sitting. This technique was developed by Dr. Jigar Shah after advanced training at Singapore General Hospital (SGH).

The roughened articular surfaces are cut and ligaments are balanced properly. New metal surfaces are implanted with a poly-plastic in between working as a smooth gliding cushion. Minimum bones are cut and ligaments are balanced in such a way that full and free range of motion is achieved on the table in the operation theater itself.

"The root of the best end result is initiated in the theater only by the operating surgeon."

Because of this, postoperative recovery becomes very fast and patients get most of the total movements before going home. This reduces the period of physiotherapy required and they become able to sit cross-legged very soon.

Benefits of CLS Technique

After knee replacement with CLS technique, patients can:

Sit easily on the floor with crossed legs

Sit on floor for religious work

Easy in-out of the car

Easy sitting on low-lying sofa

Adjust to unequal height of steps

Use Indian toilet if needed

"Feel rejuvenated from a depressed restricted life to a more mobile enthusiastic life, with feeling of being almost ten years younger than they are."

The Operation

Knee Replacement Process

1 Pre-operative

Complete check-up including blood reports, X-ray, ECG, 2D echo (if needed), and physician check-up.

2 During Surgery

Done under spinal anaesthesia. Antiseptic wash. Smaller incision and the most advanced no muscle cutting technique is used for knee replacement leading to minimum blood loss with CLS technique.

3 Post-operative

Patient can start taking liquids and soft diet within 2–3 hours post-op. Walking with walker from the next day morning.

Recovery

After Knee Operation

Day 1

Quadriceps exercise, sit with back rest

Day 2

Sit by side of bed, walk with walker

Day 3

Walking more freely confidence boosted

Day 3-5

Discharge after climbing stairs (up and down) with smiling faces and happier life awaited

25-40 days

Cross-legged sitting achieved

1 month

Can drive & swim

1.5 months

Back to work

3 months

Can play light games

Bilateral Knee Replacement (Both Knees Together)

Both knees can be replaced in a single sitting under single anaesthesia. This means single admission, avoiding repeating all procedures and medicines, and significant reduction in expenditure. Patients with severe arthritis on both sides get better outcomes compared to sequential surgery.

Decision is made jointly by surgeon and physician after patient evaluation.

Durability: Long-term results data up to 30 years already published in journals.

Common Questions

Knee Replacement FAQs

Where should one get knee replacement done?

Look for a well-equipped OT of international standards, well-experienced supporting staff, a highly qualified expert surgeon, and best quality US FDA approved joints.

Is Computerized/Robotic surgery a must?

More than 90% of success or failure depends on the surgeon's expertise. The computer is barely a supportive machine. Rather than getting impressed from advertisements, one should decide based on who is the surgeon performing the operation.

Should we go for a joint which allows cross-leg sitting?

Cross-legged sitting after surgery is not just a function of the joint. With a well done technique like CLS, most patients can sit cross-legged irrespective of the type of joint used. A well performed surgery and patient's cooperation have no alternatives.

What is the durability of the knee joint?

Joints used at Shaurya Hospital have long-term results data up to 30 years. Surgeries performed by an expert surgeon with US FDA approved joints from top-level international companies have an absolute bright and long lasting future.
