A realistic week-by-week guide to what happens after hip replacement surgery, from the first steps to returning to normal life.
Hip replacement is one of the most predictable operations in orthopedics. Knowing the timeline makes the recovery far less stressful.
Week 1
You stand and walk with a walker within 24 hours. Pain is controlled with medication and ice. Wound care and early hip precautions are taught before discharge.
Weeks 2 to 4
Stitches come out around day 12. Walking distance increases daily and most patients move from a walker to a stick.
Weeks 5 to 8
Strength returns quickly. Sitting, stair climbing and short outdoor walks feel natural. Many patients resume desk work.
Month 3 onward
Full unrestricted movement for most daily activities. Swimming and cycling are encouraged; high-impact running is not.
