Knee Replacement Surgery: When Is the Right Time?

Persistent knee pain does not always mean surgery. Here is how our orthopedic team decides when a knee replacement is the right call.

Knee pain that keeps you from walking, climbing stairs or sleeping is not something you have to live with. But surgery is rarely the first answer. At Shaurya Hospital we work through a clear sequence before recommending a total knee replacement.

Signs your knee may need more than medication

  • Pain at rest or at night, not just during activity
  • Stiffness that limits bending or straightening the knee
  • Deformity such as bow legs or knock knees getting worse
  • No relief from physiotherapy, weight management or injections after several months

What we try first

Weight reduction, strengthening of the quadriceps, activity modification, anti-inflammatory medication and lubricant injections can all buy years of comfortable movement in early and moderate arthritis.

When replacement makes sense

When X-rays show bone-on-bone contact and conservative care has stopped working, a total knee replacement restores alignment and removes the damaged surfaces. Most patients walk with support the same day and climb stairs within two to three weeks.

Recovery timeline

Day 1 — walking with a walker. Week 2 — stitches removed, independent walking indoors. Week 6 — most daily activities resumed. Month 3 — full return to routine life, including travel and driving.
